Upon arrival, I was immediately reminded of the busy shop filled streets of Danshui. Small shops and stalls lined the streets where people hawked all matter of things. Even after two months of living in Taiwan, I wouldn’t care to wager what half of the food on sale actually was. Our large group was then treated to lunch at a small restaurant between a traditional Chinese outdoor theatre, and a large old multicolored shrine. The food was great and included two entire roasted fish, duck and more kinds of tofu than I previously knew existed. From there, we said our thanks for the meal and struck out to explore the area for ourselves.
While not incredibly large, Sheng Keng makes up in character what it lacks in square feet. Everything from heavily discounted souvenirs, to geological formations can be purchased along this eclectic road. We browsed along, sometimes in large groups joking about things together, and sometimes breaking off from the group and exploring a small shop by ourselves. While I personally showed restraint and managed to not purchase anything, I saw quite a few people happily carrying bags full of souvenirs by the end of the trip.
Finally we were treated to a few relaxing moments of a traditional tea ceremony before buying a small bowl of Sheng Keng’s specialized Tofu ice cream and hitting the road. It was a great experience and another small insight into Taiwanese culture. I am anxiously awaiting our next trip as a group, and the memories which will undoubtedly be formed.
