A Day to Remember

As an English Corner tutor I am often treated to amazing experiences with my students on and off-campus.  I have been floored by the joviality and warmth of Taiwan's people.  I have learned that this is an island comprised of people who truly embrace their visitors.  Indeed, I have met many of the finest hosts of my life, in the short span of one month, right here in Jingmei.

One unforgettable occasion I'd like to discuss began with a visit to the Taipei Fine Arts Museum, to Pixar Animation Studio's "20 Years of Animation Exhibit."  My hosts of the day were comprised of two English Corner veterans, Stanley and Vivian, and their flock of esteemed friends.  I was overjoyed Stan and Vivian's planning as I believe Pixar to be not just one of the best animation studios, but one of the best film studios ever.  From blockbusters the likes of Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Walle, Ratatouille, and Up the extraordinary quality of their work speaks for itself.

Our party combed the museum slowly and methodically careful not to miss any sketch, sculpture, screening, model, or visual illusion the exhibit had to offer.  We got to talking about what Pixar films touched each of us most, and why-it turns out you can learn much about a person by which Pixar gem they most readily rant about.

After the museum visit our imaginations were inspired but our stomachs were empty.  Stanley, Vivian, and friends prepared a follow-up surprise for us: A trip to an upscale...Pizza Hut.  As a proud New Yorker I will admit that I have not had many Pizza Hut experiences-when you have quite possibly the best slices outside of Italy (prove me wrong) you don't frequent many corporate fast-food pizza joints.

However, I must admit, this Pizza hut was different.  It had ceramic art, hardwood tables and painted walls.  It appeared to be the love child of Pizza Hut and Starbucks, but I wasn't complaining.  The Taiwanese take on pizza was more than agreeable and the banter that ensued had us all in stitches.

All in all, the day was one that I will cherish for a long while to come, and I can't wait for my next cultural excursion alongside students-turned friends.
