I still can't believe I'm already wrapping up my first full month week at Shih Hsin University...in some ways, it already seems like I've always lived here.
The past few weeks have been filled with classes and adjusting to my schedule at the English Corner. I have met between 50-70 new faces there over the course of my time here. My first week here was interesting, as my students and I had the typical "first-time conversation" which is almost always the same:
I ask them: What is your major? What grade are you in? What are your interests?
They ask me: Where are you from? Why are you here? Do you like the food?
I had had fun at the English Corner as I meet and get to know people. Many of my students have guessed my age to be 30 (I am 21). Everyone always thinks its funny that I like Pig Blood. My students tolerate my slow butchering of Chinese when I choose to use it, often amused that I am trying so hard. I have been exposed to many amazing experiences through my students and my work in the English Corner, and I have learned much about both Taiwan and America. The differences between our nations are striking, but so are the similarities. I am thus far enjoying the teacher experience, although I at times feel that I have no idea what I'm doing.
My students are for the most part enthusiastic and eager to learn. As I have been teaching and conversing in English, my students are teaching me Chinese, but I feel they are progressing at a much faster pace than me. They all think it's cute when I try to use tones or write characters, i apparently am at roughly a kindergarten level in my Chinese...here's to being up to a 4th-grade level by December!
I would like to end this by thanking all of my students who have incorporated me into their busy lives. I have been having fun with many of them, and hope to get to know them better in the future! Looking forward to more days at the English Corner, improvement in my student's English and in my Chinese!
